Oh no! It's a trap!

by mohdzuraini @ Wednesday, May. 07, 2008 - 03:40:57

Being able to fully maximise space usage, is another critical factor in architecture. But to create a space into a trap, is another thing.

A snap shot that I took while hunting for a bargain in a mega store here in Singapore.

FAP
Fireman Access Panel or A Booby Trap??

Booby trap
An actual booby trap

How it works
How a booby trap actually works

1) Defination of a booby trap:

In warfare, a booby trap is an anti-personnel weapon placed in building or in a non-combat area that has a psychological attraction for enemy soldiers. Triggering the device will kill or injure the victim.

2) Defination of a Fireman Access Panel :

ACCESS OPENING TO BUILDING FOR FIRE FIGHTING - FIRE CODE REGULATION 2007

4.2.3(a) Openings on the external wall for external fire fighting and rescue operation. Access openings shall include unobstructed external wall openings, windows, balcony doors, glazed wall panels or access panels. Windows, doors, wall panels or access panels must be readily openable from inside and outside, unless fitted with breakable glazing. Inside and outside of access openings shall be unobstructed at all times during the occupancy of the building.

Wonder what will happen if there's a real fire outbreak and the fire rescuer needs to access during the emergency? - Oh no! It's a trap! :)

The Forbidden Kingdom - (Movie Review)

The-Forbidden-Kingdom
The Forbidden Kingdom

A great treat for all chinese martial-art lovers!

Never before, in a movie where you can catch a chance to watch the all-time kung-fu celebrity stars like Jackie Chan and Jet Li, contesting each other with their skillfull kicks and punches!

This English + Chinese movie, is a mystical epic adventure of an American boy from Boston, into the unknown world of unfamilliar cultures. Like A dream in a dream, he has to conquest obstacles unexplainable and of total mystery to him, for the sake of returning the magical wooden stick (a sort of weapon), known as the 'staff', that once belonged to the legendary Monkey King, who was cursed and turned into stone, by the Jade Warlord general during a fighting challenge. Only with the return of the staff to his hand, the Monkey King is able to free himself once again from the curse.

With amazingly beautiful backdrops of a "once-upon-a-time-in-china", it has brought audiences into an unkown kingdom through the gate of no gate, where he met a drunken kung-fu master, who saved him from the brutality of the warlords army.

From there, their relationships grew fonder, where they realised that both need each other's help to survive in this long and dangerous journey. Along the way, there came Golden Sparrow (Liu Yifei), a young & sweet chinese girl, who is seeking revenge for the death of her parents, murdered by the same evil general, Jade Warlord. A warrior princess herself, only she who knew the way to defeat the general warlord, is through piercing a specially made Jade Arrow cum 'hair-pin' into him. (Wow! That's creatively interesting!)

An additonal member added to the 3-men tribe, when a monk who suddenly crossed into their path and attempt to steal the 'staff' from the them. Unknowing that he also has the same objective to return the staff to the rightful owner, a fierceful kung-fu fighting scene has taken place in a temple betwen the drunken master (Jackie Chan) and the silent monk (Jet Li).

That has to be the best part of the movie where they both showcased the best of their fighting talents which kept audiences tight to their seats. Speeds, agility, endurance, flying kicks, fearsome punches and all things that relates to shaolin kung-fu.

However, I feel the overall story is just duplications and re-enactments of movies like the Karate Kid, The Drunken Master and the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, which I could recalled watching similar storylines of those 3 movies. (Not very creative on that part). But, you can expect some comedy acting by Jackie Chan himself and a little bit of romance between the American boy and Golden Sparrow, which I think it was just to soften the whole mood. (No kissing scenes in this movie, so lower down your expectation.)

Though, the storyline is pretty simple (like other typical chinese swordfighting dramas), the cgi used for this movie was very good. Billiantly put together with the camera angles (esp. on the fighing scenes), I think its one of the best kung-fu movie ever made in hollywood that I've ever watched.

Taglines : The staff, Monkey King, Warlords, Gate of No Gate, prophecy, elixir (magic potion), immortal, 5 elements, Heavenly Palace, Jade Emperor, ancient china, warriors, bounty hunters

I think Liu Yifei (Golden Sparrow), with her oriental features, is very sweet looking in this movie. Should watch her!

The Window (Put the blame on me)

by mohdzuraini @ Thursday, Apr. 24, 2008 - 00:51:23

After nearly 2 months from that incident, the whole nation engrossed to the TV set and patiently waited for the verdict.

The Minister took the stand and gave the full account of what had actually happened to the terrorist, who escaped the so-called "tightly secured" detention cell.

My mind was wildly anticipating scenes like from the TV series 'Prison Break', where unexplainable modus operandi might have made the impossible escape possible.

All were dead silence when he finally revealed "the most crucial factor" for the escape. - The Window.

No grille

The taglines: "so simple as to appear silly and incredible", "found no evidence of convinance, collusion or assistance", "crept into the operating culture", "costly and painful wake-up call"

Where too many mouthful words were used, they finally concluded that the first blame has to be pointed to the small window in the toilet!

Due to the sensitive details of the investigation, they decided it was not possible to release the entire report without harming national interest and endangering the men and women who serve the nation. Only keen and valid interest were made public.

Seriously, I found it amusing. Amused not because of the incident, but the guts to stand with a straight face and preached lullaby hoping to lull the nation to sleep.

For the speech finale, the minister has thanked the public who offered their ideas and help to the Government, and also to those who wrote to him or blogged on the Internet expressing anger and in some cases, abuse.

"I understand their frustration" he added. (Wow! He reads blogs too?)

"I am deeply grateful for the way Singaporeans have rallied behind our efforts, even as they rightly expect a proper accounting. This is why I have given Members (of Parliament) and the public a full account of what happened, what we will do to fix the problem and ensure that the same problem does not happen again in the future."

Ironically this time, Bill Gates didn't get the blame for the "Windows" problem...hahaha!

Before elaborating further, go fix the windows first, ok?

(Case closed. Let's move on!)

El Orfanato - The Orphanage (Movie Review)

by mohdzuraini @ Saturday, Mar. 29, 2008 - 17:26:15
The Orphanage Movie
El Orfanato - The Orphanage

¡Fui al cine, no sabiendo qué esperar mirar una película española y finalmente salí y darlo 5 posición de estrella! - How's that for my Spanish? *winks* Do I get 5 stars for it too? Heh!

A spanish film, which potrayed a supernatural story that took place in a residence which was once an orphanage.

Like any other kids, little Simon, has imaginary friends. They were not just any kind of ordinary imaginary beings, but were the long lost souls from the past. Laura, being a mother, never believes that imaginary friends exist. But this time, she gets to meet them. A great suspense drama which has a touching yet beautiful ending. (I shed some tears towards the end *sobs*)

Taglines : Treasure hunt, beach, caves, I have a friend and his name is Tomas, once you found make a wish and it will come true, basement, little house.

Not very much like any other horror movies, this paranormal drama is worth watching.

Language was definitely not a barrier for me (as it has english text) especially when a movie was very well-written and love how it has been directed.

Credits to director Juan Antonio Bayona and writter Sergio G.Sanchez.

Nonetheless, as I was clearing up my mailbox, this humour write-up I found tickles my funny bone! Let me share with you some laughter, and don't forget to smile... at least :-)

Finally...

A recent scientific study found that womenfind different male faces attractive depending on where they are in their menstrual cycle.

For example, when a woman is ovulating she prefers a man with rugged, masculine features. However, when she is menstruating, she prefers a man doused in petrol and set on fire, with scissors stuck in his eye and a cricket stump shoved up his arse!

In Life...

Some people are smart, but not very wise

Some people are wise, but not very smart

Some people are smart and wise, but unlucky

Some people are not very smart and wise, but fortunate.

Malaysia's Wind of Change

by mohdzuraini @ Sunday, Mar. 09, 2008 - 22:32:57

After yersterday's 12th General Election (PRU12), Malaysia ought to brace a political change in the country.

Call it a revolution, Barisan Nasional (BN), the coalition front, suffers a huge setback in history since gaining independence from the British about 50 years ago. The oppposition parties (DAP, PKR, PAS), has outstandingly denied the 2/3 majority win that Barisan Nasional (BN) has always wanted - all thanks to the people of Malaysia.

After failing to win back the Kelantan state for the past 18 years, losing the battle for island-state of Penang to opposition, Democratic Action Party (DAP), is considered another major blow for BN. Adding salt to the wound, the ruling government also lost another 2 more nothern states of Kedah and Perak. Whereas, BN strong fort, the state of Selangor has its first change of political landscape losing to Parti KeAdilan Rakyat (PKR), a party lead by an influential political figure, ex-Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

My salute to the opposition alliances, which had fought brave and hard, putting in the right strategies to fold the dominance of BN. Being supreme, BN should actually should have prescience of the outcome of this election many months ago, where technically, it has already losing mandate from the people. Many politcal watchers have also predicted that BN's past winning streak will come to an abrupt end if the national domestic issues, such as race, religions, inflations, rising cost and other bread and butter matters, are not being taken into consideration seriously.

Losing powers, for some heavyweight ministers to less unknown candidates, also pointed out that all the changes that they had brought to the people doesn't guarantee easy victory. Afterall, it's the hearts of the people that matter most and not the preeching of empty slogans that will win votes.

It's about time BN to make a rightful change within their coalition and learn the beauty of democracy.

Nevertherless, the truth hurts.

I dedicate this song to the people of Malaysia. May there be a better tomorrow.

Scorpion - Wind of Change

Prison Break - And this is for real!

by mohdzuraini @ Friday, Feb. 29, 2008 - 02:50:04

While I was blogging this, massive traffic jams spotted at both immigration checkpoints where high level of security checks are being made on all vehicles leaving this country.

Singapore has its first blow for security lapse since 9/11, when a terror suspect escaped from a detention camp, on 27 Feb 2008 at around 4pm (Singapore time).

Known as Mas Selamat Kastari, was the commander of a Singapore terrorist network, Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), which is said to be associated with Al-Qaeda terrorist group. Apprehended in 2006 in Bintan Indonesia, he was then brought back to Singapore on terrorism charges, being the mastermind in the planning of several terrorist acts to be carried out here.

Quoted from International Herald Tribune, "...Given Singapore's small size and efficient security services, getting out of the country would seem to be difficult..." But after an islandwide massive manhunt operation for more then 24 hrs, the most wanted man, is yet to be found.

Thousands of security personels from every level, were activated since yesterday. Involving not only all police land divisions, The Special Operation Command troops, the elite police gurkha forces, The Coast Guards and also the Singapore Army.

Ironically, this extensive deployment is to hunt down a 47-year-old man, with a belly, walking with a limp, unarmed, wearing only a T-shirt and shorts. All he did was, to sneak out unknowingly from a heavily guarded prison cell, equipped with the latest state-of-art security systems cum with high fencing and barbed wires.

With no high-tech equipments, the man walked himself into a toilet and disappeared. Pooff!

Over the years, Singapore has invested millions of tax-payers money to enhance the security of the state. Also quoted from International Herald Tribune, "...Singapore has one of the tightest security systems in the world..." but yet failed to detain a "semi-handicap" man escaping from a detention cell.

Now, what has the govenment been doing over the years? Why spent so much and yet failed a simple task. Security lapse? Flaws in the system? Being too complacent and slacking?

As citizens, we have always been vigilant tracking terrorist activities just to keep everyone safe and sound. We have always play our part in the total defence of Singapore to safeguard its sovereignty, tranquility and harmonious living. But again, the incompetence of the government has let everyone down, hence wasting the efforts and money spent.

Bringing the country into another high alert and tightening the security, now seems useless. The people now is not questioning what is going to happen next, but rather, what the government is doing?

The Minister of Home Affair, Mr Wong Kang Seng, has publicly apologised. "This should never have happened. I am sorry that it had. An independent investigation is under way, and we should not speculate on what and how it happened."

Dear Mr Minister, sorry is not the best word that we wanted to hear from you now. Can you guarantee the safety of our country after what has happened? Can you guarantee the world is not in another level of danger after an alledged terrorist made an escape while in custody, due to your weak security? Until you say yes, we shall not accept your apology.
